For a year, Megan O’Mara has been writing Grant Holdings a letter a week in the hopes they will sell her the land a the base of Berner’s Mountain to fulfill her father’s dream of an aqueduct to furnish the valley with water. When she receives no reply, she enters the lottery hoping her new husband will have enough money to get that land for her. Those hopes are dashed when the man who wins the lottery is a bum living in a ramshackle cabin with no indoor plumbing.

Morgan O’Malley, owner of Grant Holdings, comes to Bakerstown to see this land for himself. Megan O’Mara’s land has underground aquifers that could triple the value of all the land in the valley. And in marrying her, he gets half. Now he just has to pretend to be poor.
